Board of High School and Intermediate Education (UPMSP)

Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Uttar Pradesh (UP Board)

The Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Uttar Pradesh or UP Board is a state government administered autonomous examining authority for the Standard 10 examination (or secondary school level examination) and Standard 12 examination (or inter college level examination) of Uttar Pradesh, headquartered in Allahabad India.

Set up in the year 1921 at Allahabad by an act of United Provinces Legislative Council, UP Board conducted its first examination in the year 1923. UP Board is the biggest examining body in the world and the first to adopt 10+2 system of examination. The first state level examination is held at the end of standard 10, also known as high school examination and the next one is conducted after completion of standard 12, known as intermediate examination.

Being the most populous state of India, it became quite difficult for UP Board to administer and conduct its activities centrally from Allahabad. Thus, four Regional Offices of the Board were established at Meerut (1973), Varanasi (1978), Bareilly (1981) and Allahabad (1987) under the control of Regional Secretaries.

Main Functions of UP Board:

  • To grant recognition to aspiring schools
  • To prescribe courses and textbooks for High School and Intermediate level
  • To conduct intermediate and high school examinations
  • To provide equivalence to the examinations conducted by other Boards.

Number of Schools:

In Uttar Pradesh, a few secondary schools are being governed by the Indian Council of School Education and Central Board of Secondary Education, but most secondary schools seek recognition from U.P. Board. At present, there are more than 22,000 secondary schools recognized by the U.P. Board of High School and Intermediate Education and the Board is conducting examination and preparing the result of 64 lakh students across the state.
